Almost everything you can buy through LitBuy comes from one of three Chinese platforms: Taobao, 1688 and Weidian. They overlap in what they sell but differ a lot in pricing, minimum order sizes, buyer protection and how easy they are to use from abroad. Picking the wrong one is a common beginner mistake: ordering a single item from a 1688 wholesaler, or an expensive item from an unvetted Weidian shop. 1688: the wholesale platform
What 1688 is
1688.com is Alibaba's domestic wholesale marketplace, where factories and distributors sell to Chinese businesses. It is the source behind many Taobao and Weidian listings.
Advantages
- Lowest unit prices. Factory pricing with no retail markup.
- Direct manufacturer access. Customization and negotiation for larger orders.
- Business features. Trade assurance, factory verification, invoices.
Disadvantages
- Minimum order quantities. Often 2 to 10 pieces, sometimes per color or size.
- Written for businesses. Sparse descriptions, few reviews, limited returns.
- Harder to navigate. Spec tables instead of lifestyle photos.
Best for
- Starting a reselling business or stocking a small shop
- Buying five or more of the same item
- Event supplies (weddings, parties) in bulk
- Custom manufacturing
Not ideal for single items, gifts or trying something before committing.

Taobao: the consumer marketplace
What Taobao is
Taobao is China's largest consumer marketplace, run by Alibaba. It combines small shops, brand stores and factory outlets, with a review system that includes buyer photos and a dispute process.
Advantages
- Selection. Effectively every category, from budget to premium.
- Consumer features. Detailed listings, buyer-photo reviews, 7-day no-reason returns on most items, buyer protection.
- No minimums. Buy one item.
- Seller reputation system. Heart, diamond and crown levels reflect cumulative sales; feedback percentages and response times are public.
Disadvantages
- Higher unit prices than 1688. Retail margin included.
- Variable quality. Factories, resellers and dropshippers share the same search results, so vetting the seller is essential.

- Personal shopping and gifts
- Fashion, home decor, electronics accessories, beauty
- Sampling an item before ordering in bulk on 1688
Not ideal for bulk sourcing at the lowest possible price.
Weidian: the mobile shop platform
What Weidian is
Weidian (微店) lets individuals and small businesses open a storefront that lives mainly inside WeChat and the Weidian app. It is popular with independent fashion and streetwear sellers.
Advantages
- Low prices. Often below Taobao for comparable items from small sellers.
- Fashion focus. Strong streetwear, sneaker and Korean/Japanese style communities.
- Direct seller relationships. Many shops are one-person operations that respond quickly.
Disadvantages
- Thinner buyer protection. Fewer safeguards and shop-dependent return policies.
- Inconsistent quality. Fewer reviews and photos, so more research per listing.
- Mobile-first. Harder to browse on desktop; product pages carry less detail.
Best for
- Streetwear and trend pieces
- Budget basics
- Buyers who are comfortable vetting sellers
Not ideal for high-value items, electronics or anything you cannot afford to get wrong.

Personal shopping and gifts: Taobao

Fashion on a budget: Weidian, with Taobao as backup
Use Weidian for trend pieces from sellers with a track record, and Taobao for wardrobe staples where returns matter. Always work from the centimeter size chart.
Reselling or bulk: 1688
Sample on Taobao first (one or two units), then find the same or an equivalent product on 1688 and order in volume. LitBuy consolidates the shipment.

- Research on Taobao. Find the style, read reviews, learn the going price.
